ISLAND OF THE DOLLS

The Island of the Dolls can be found in the Xochimilco canals, about 28 km south of Mexico City.

Xochimilco The Island Dolls

Just south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimico you can find a small island with a sad background which never intended to be a tourist destination. The island is known as Isla de las Munecas (Island of the Dolls).

It is dedicated to the lost soul of a poor girl who met her fate too soon in strange circumstances. The area has thousands of people, but this small island is home to hundreds of terrifying dolls.

Their severed limbs, decapitated heads, and blank eyes adorn trees.
Dolls are threatening, even in the bright light of midday, but in the dark, they are particularly disturbing.

The Legend

It is said that a girl was found drowned in mysterious circumstances many years ago on this island and that the dolls are possessed by her spirit.

Local legend says that the dolls move their heads and arms and even opened their eyes.

Some witnesses claim they had heard the dolls whispering to each other, while others who were on a boat near the island said the dolls lured them to come down to the island.

Of course these witnesses are exaggerating and the island is in no way possessed but the truth is that the Isla de las Munecas is a very creepy place that marks the casual visitor.

 The Truth Behind The Legend

Don Julian Santana Barrera (picture bellow) was the caretaker of the island. The story goes that Julian found a little girl drowned in mysterious circumstances while he was not able to save her life.

Shortly thereafter, Julian saw a floating doll near the canals. Most probably, the doll belonged to the girl.

He picked up the doll and hung it to a tree, as a way of showing respect and support the spirit of the girl.

Others question even the existence of the drowned girl. Reports conclude that Julian has made up the story about the girl in his solitude.

Julian was apparently haunted by the spirit of the girl and started hanging more dolls in an attempt to please her spirit.

According to those close to him, it was as if Julian was driven by some unseen force that completely changed him.
Apparently he was very marked by the fact that he was not able to save the little girl’s life.

After 50 years of collecting dolls and hanging them on the island, Julian was found dead, drowned in the same spot where the girl did.

Island of the Dolls hanging aroundMany people on the island believe that Julian has joined the other spirits of the island.
The locals are very faithful that the Isla de las Munecas is a charmed place.

After Julian’s death in 2001, it has become a tourist attraction, where visitors bring more dolls.

Since the death of Julian, the island has become very famous and has even been featured in many articles and even TV                                                       shows.

Although the action of Don Julian was innocent and even admirable, it ended up being portrayed as a real nightmarish destination.

Soulless eyes follow visitors as they visit the small island (which is actually a floating garden).

The Winchester Mystery House

Beautiful but Bizarre!

The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion in San Jose, California which was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester. The property and mansion have been claimed to be haunted—including by Winchester herself—since construction commenced in 1884.

The Winchester Mansion was a modern marvel when construction was (first) completed in 1884, with indoor plumbing, a hot shower, and central heating. With over 160 rooms and 40 bedrooms and 10,000 brightly colored window panes, the Winchester Mansion was one of the biggest mansions in the Bay area in it's day.

Winchester Riffles

The Boston Medium told Winchester, supposedly by way of her late husband, that she had to leave her home in New Haven and travel West, where she must continuously build a home for herself and the spirits of people who had fallen victim to Winchester rifles.Winchester left her New Haven home and headed for California. In 1884 she purchased an unfinished farmhouse in Santa Clara Valley, and began building her mansion. Carpenters were hired and worked on the house day and night until it became a seven story mansion.
The June 1937 issue of Modern Mechanix relates the story from then-current accounts:
"Winchester and the baby girl died suddenly and Mrs Winchester, stunned by the tragedy, fell into a coma so serious that physicians despaired of her life. Finally she recovered and, at a friend’s suggestion, visited a medium. During a séance, according to those familiar with her story, she received a communication from her dead husband in which he said: 'Sarah dear, if our house had not been finished, I would still be with you. I urge you now to build a home, but never let it be finished, for then you will live.'

A second famed window was designed by Tiffany himself for Mrs Winchester. This window was carefully designed so that when the light hits the crystals just so, the room will be filled with thousands of rainbow prisms. However, due to the poor placement of the piece, this will never be seen. It is located in a room with no direct light and is built facing a wall.

Every Friday the 13th the large bell on the property is rung 13 times at 1300 hours (1 o'clock p.m.) in tribute to Winchester.
